    500gb sata drive
    c: primary, operating files 137gb
d: logical, stored files, misc 337 gb
After clean reinstall of xp pro, now does not recognize d: drive.
See's it on disk management, but unable to access it.
Asked to format drive. See's it as free space, extended partition.
I have not deleted info., only reinstalled to c: drive.

My question is how to get xp to re-establish and acknowledge drive d:, so I can get to files.

I've verified info there by VirtualLab Data Recovery 5.5.17 trial verizon, but will not recreate without purchase.
Is there a way without purchase of software program.

thank you, for any assistance you can offer.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Which version of XP Pro did you load? The 137 Gb limit on C:\ looks very much like the limit on disk size in XP/XP SP1.

To see your 337 Gb D:\ drive you will need to install XP SP2 from scratch - not sure if simply installing SP2 will do the trick.

Did you simply load SP2 or did you reinstall the OS using a slipstreamed disk with SP2.

If the former I think it would be worth trying a reinstall (clean) or at the least a repair install and see what pans out.

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but will contact others to take a look.

Edit - I see from your PM (please keep all responses on the BBS for all to see) that you reinstalled to no effect.

I did a clean install with new disk sp2, like you suggested.
when it starts install, does see both partitions. Once loaded still sees it as raw disk and asks to format drive d:
    this was suggested ;
" Would try "testdisk" advanced options/recover boot sector. Be sure to read the HOw-To-use.
    www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html "
not familar with program... looked at it but no change... just unsure of app.

The opinion of a respected WindowsBBS Team Member is that the disk is hosed - caused by the install of a pre SP2 version of XP.

    You have 2 options ....

Bite the bullet and buy the recovery software you trialed and hope it lives up to expectations, or .....

Use a Bart PE CD to see if you can effect file recovery - I have NO experience of using these disks, but they are reputable and solid.

    thanks pete.
I used http://findandmount.com/download/ to load a temporary drive. Copied files from drive back to c: ( slow process, but worked) and reformated d: then replacing files, still in progress. had 47gb on drive.
I'll let you know end result so this may help someone else with ID.10.T error lol

So glad to hear that you have been able to recover the data on the drive - thanks for updating :)
