Shared printer printing too many copies

I recently shared my printer (USB wired to a wireless router, where I print off it from a laptop connected wirelessly), and I love this, but every once in a while, it does something unpredictable: it prints up about 30 copies of a single-page document, when I "ve only asked for one.

At first I thought that this was because MS Word or Windows XP remembered the last print job I did, and was applying that same number to a subsequent print job. But I know I haven't printed up 30 copies in a while, and it did this today. ANd the document was only minutes old, so its not like Word remembered that the last time I wanted to print it up, I asked for 30--this document had never been printed before.

This isn't a major problem, but I'm wondering why this is going on. Is there anything I can do to stop it? I do have a batch file that will clear up all print jobs, and I run this when it happens, but I'd rather not have to do this at all.

I am on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, running XP SP3, with a D-Link DIR-655 router, with an HP Laserjet 1018 printer.

I noticed that after printing numerous copies in a PDF viewing program, and then switching to MS Word, even though Word was set to print only one copy, I would still get 20-30 copies of a document printed out. Is this the way printers are supposed to work? Or is this a glitch because of a shared printer? Or....

If the above sequence is the ONLY time this print problem occurs I would be suspicious PDF program / print request has left something behind which is not agreeing with WORD print request. But first we need to have a better understanding of the situation and choose a path with minimal work or pain.

    HARDWARE
It appears you have your HP1018 printer plugged into your D-Link DIR-655 router via USB ports. If yes, what firmware on the router are you running. Current release: Firmware 1.34NA 5/20/2010. After you click on provided link, click on "Firmware" tab for download. Note D-Link warning ...
A interesting discussion for D-Link DIR-655 Router and SharePoint/SharePort you may want to read. It started in Oct. 2008 through July 2010. When it comes to firmware flashing of any device, I'm vary cautious ... I generally choose it as my last resort.

    Programs
I would first pursue the PDF / WORD sequence anomaly. If this pattern/problem always displays itself, some possible solution's ...
If PDF viewer is Adobe, try installing Foxit Reader. Is a very popular program (free), used by many here on the forums. I use it on all 6 of my computers. Before installing Foxit, I would suggest a full power-down of the network, including D-Link router and all computers. We don't want any gremlins hiding in the shadows. Let us know how things progress.
